Just days after the hubbub of the United States’ SEAL’s raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound, in which the infamous leader of al-Qaida was slain, this chapter of history has already been immortalized in a video game. Kuma Games is a developer that creates games and episodic chapters to its game frameworks based on historical or current events. Its first-person shooter game Kuma War 2 has just had a final chapter added based on bin Laden’s death.
According to Kuma Games’ press release, “Since 2003 we’ve chronicled military conflict in a changing world. The defeat of the Taliban, the capture of Saddam, IED and drone attacks, two Surges, elections, and Iraqi heroes defending their own representative government. We’ve brought all of these to life to millions of gamers in quick-release, high-quality, game episodes,” said Keith Halper, CEO of KUMA Games. “Using games, we’ve brought critical history to a generation raised on digital media. But KUMA\WAR II was a story without an ending … until now. We had to go back for one more ‘ripped from the headlines re-creation.’ We had to end ‘The War.’ ”
The characters, buildings, weapons, and objectives were abstracted from various news sources to help flesh out the real-world-styled environment. The devil is in the details, though — and the details surrounding bin Laden’s death seem to be changing since the story is still fresh and the details remain to be sorted out. Another question on the table for some is whether it’s in good taste or not to be celebrating — interactively in this case — in a man’s death, even if he was much despised by most people.
