Three Rings and Sega of America have teamed up to respectively create and publish Spiral Knights, a new free-to-play multiplayer online game, which will be launched April 4. Spiral Knights is a bright, colorful console-styled action-oriented game based in the persistent online world of Clockworks. The game features gameplay for up to four players simultaneously, dynamic and intricate dungeons, fighting monsters, solving puzzles, and finding treasures. As a free-to-play game, Spiral Knights will be complemented with a virtual currency system for players who want to invest in in-game equipment.
“Based on our experience with titles like Puzzle Pirates, as well as fond memories of dreaming up new games when we were kids, we have built an instantly accessible, action-packed world that appeals to gamers of every type,” says Three Rings CEO Daniel James. “Spiral Knights skips the stereotypical level grind for a co-op adventure that is focused on fun gameplay above all else.”
Three Rings is based in San Francisco, with offices in Madison and Philadelphia. Spiral Knights is hardly the first dance Three Rings has had with free-to-play games. In 2003, it developed the pirate-themed Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates, an early forerunner in the free-to-play MMORPG space. Online strategy game Bang! Howdy and the Whirled online game portal followed. Three Rings has had a solid track record in crafting bright and charming worlds withing its previous games, so there is every reason to expect similarly from Spiral Knights in just a few weeks.
