Gameloft SA, a mobile and casual game developer, is looking beyond its familiar turf on WiiWare and DS, Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade, Apple’s iPod, iTouch and iPhones, and PCs for growth. For growth, the French developer is looking to new horizons, specifically Amazon’s Android application delivery platform and the connected TV marketplace.
Gameloft CEO Michel Guillemot said in an interview that the French developer would be looking to Amazon, which is the world’s largest online retailer and where consumers are comfortable using their credit cards, as a place to promote their games. Additionally, Guillemot said he felt Amazon was reasonably secure from pirates and malware, thus making that a perfect platform for consumers to acquire games.
Gameloft CFO Alexandre de Rochefort stated in an interview that TV games will start to become a significant revenue driver in 2012. Samsung and Panasonic have featured Gameloft’s games on their recent model-connected TV sets. Right now, a large percentage of Gameloft’s revenue (22 percent) is derived from Apple products, but de Rochefort said one day Android platform revenue could match up with Apple platform-based game revenue.
Gameloft has announced that many of its games will be offered through Nintendo’s upcoming 3DS e-shop, a new digital store for users to download content through the 3DS portable game system.
