Massively multiplayer online games are typically viewed as interactive entertainment that historically and logistically belong to the PC domain — and certainly moreso than to the younger, jostick-wielding console crowd. However, when Sony Online Entertainment’s DC Universe Online MMORPG launched on both the PC and PlayStation 3 last month, questions lingered about how successful the game would be on the PS3 — until now. The first indications are out there how capably SOE has reached its base of online PS3 gamers.
According to Chris Cao, DCUO‘s audience is about 45 percent PlayStation 3 gamers. So far, SOE’s observed that PS3 gamers play more than PC gamers, but their play sessions are shorter — to the tune of 1-2 hours versus 2-3 hours.
Early metrics also show that while gamers have power-leveled their characters early, they haven’t delved deep into what their characters are capable of. Beyond leveling up, DCUO characters can gain new skills and items. Once a hero or villain’s character maxes out their skill points and earns all costumes, a maxed level 30 character is essentially a level 50 character.
